India’s knitwear exports

Coimbatore-Tiruppur Region Drives 55% of India’s Knitwear Exports

Coimbatore & Tiruppur together contribute nearly 55% of India’s knitwear export, Textile Commissioner Vrunda Manohar Desai confirmed during a recent session with textile associations and stakeholders in Coimbatore.

Tamil Nadu Textile Commissioner R Lalitha attended alongside textile association representatives from the Coimbatore and Tiruppur regions. Export sustainability, recycling initiatives, subsidy-related matters, and textile import developments were on the agenda.

Export Contribution and Industry Employment

In her address to stakeholders, Desai put knitwear exports from the Coimbatore-Tiruppur area at around ₹ 45,000 crore for 2024-25. She further noted that garment exports from both regions had exceeded ₹45,000 crore, with the sector currently employing around six lakh workers.

She pointed to Tiruppur’s zero liquid discharge systems and environmental compliance practices as the foundation of its reputation as a model textile cluster. The Centre, she added, is encouraging other textile regions to study and adopt relevant elements of that approach.

Updates on Textile Schemes

Referring to the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS), she said 855 grievances under the Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (A-TUFS) are presently under review, with efforts underway to address long-pending cases.

Desai also spoke about the Textile Employment and Entrepreneurship Mission (TEEM), stating that the initiative is expected to focus on garmenting, weaving and processing, with detailed operational guidelines expected subsequently. Work is also underway on HSN codes and branding support for recycled textile units.

Earlier Tamil Nadu Textile Commissioner R. Lalitha requested the Centre to consider waiving import duty on cotton and reopening a Cotton Corporation of India warehouse in Coimbatore. Desai commented that the matter would be taken up with the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI).
