Australia-India Trade Pact Opens Zero-Duty Access, Unlocking New Opportunities for Indian Exporters

India’s export landscape is set for a significant boost as 100% of Australian tariff lines for Indian exports move to zero duty from January 1, 2026, creating fresh momentum for labour-intensive and manufacturing-driven sectors. The announcement was shared by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, underscoring the growing impact of the India–Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA).

ECTA Fuels India’s Export Growth as Australia Emerges as a Strategic Trade Partner

The India-Australia ECTA, in force since December 29, 2022, has delivered sustained export growth, stronger market access, and improved supply-chain resilience. India’s exports to Australia grew 8% in FY 2024-25, reinforcing Australia as a strategic export market.

Growth spans key sectors including textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petroleum products, and gems & jewellery, exports up 16% (Apr–Nov 2025). Agri-exports also rose sharply across fruits, marine products, spices and coffee.

“ECTA has delivered meaningful outcomes for Indian exporters, MSMEs, farmers and workers alike,” the minister noted, highlighting the agreement’s role in enabling inclusive trade growth.

Beyond tariff cuts, ECTA is strengthening supply chains as India diversifies exports, while ongoing CECA talks position the pact as a cornerstone of India’s Indo-Pacific trade strategy.
