India’s custom garment manufacturing market is experiencing unprecedented growth as young urban consumers are switching from mass-produced clothing to personalized fashion, with the sector expected to more than double in value over the next eight years.
The trend has moved far beyond traditional wedding wear and special occasions. From college fest group tees to hoodies supporting social causes, personalized clothing has become everyday wear for urban youth who want their wardrobe to reflect their personality.
Market research firm Credence Research projects the Indian Custom Apparel Market will jump from US$48.83 million in 2024 to US$107.46 million by 2032, clocking a 10.36% annual growth rate.
What’s driving this shift? Young consumers increasingly see clothing as personal expression rather than just fashion. Technology has made it easier, too. D2C brands let customers design their own pieces online. On the other hand, Direct-to-Garment printing methods have cut both costs and delivery times.
The Challenge – Scaling Personalization in Urban Markets
Yet the road isn’t without hurdles. Urban brands face rising costs and operational hurdles:
- Margins are tight with customized production.
- Supply chain issues affect the quality of blank garments and timely sourcing.
- Pricing pressures make it tricky to balance affordability with profit.
- Logistics complexity in metros and tier-2 cities can slow deliveries.
Despite these challenges, demand keeps soaring. The urban clothing business in India is projected to touch US$146.3 billion by 2032, growing at 4% CAGR (IBEF).
The Custom Garment Manufacturing Market – Ready to Scale
Gen Z and millennials are the real driving force behind the custom garment manufacturing industry. For them, clothing is a statement.
- The custom T-shirt printing market alone is valued at USD 363.5 million.
- Online commerce simplifies designing and ordering clothes.
- Producers can reduce waste and maintain sustainability, thanks to the print-on-demand model.
- Steady revenue continues to push B2B opportunities like corporate gifts and college uniforms.
Urban India will remain the centre of this shift, shaping trends for the rest of the country. With disposable incomes rising, digital access expanding, and fashion becoming personal, custom apparel isn’t just a fad. It’s the future of Indian fashion.
